One make, and one city’s worth of quirks

We are an independent repair outfit working Viking equipment in Denver — cooking and refrigeration both, because a Viking kitchen usually has one of each and being sent two firms is nobody’s idea of service.

What we take on

Ranges and rangetops: ignition, valves, regulators, and burner setup done to the rating plate rather than to sea level. Ovens: igniters, elements, probes that have drifted, convection blowers, hinges and cracked inner glass, in range ovens and in wall ovens that have to come out of the cabinet run. Built-in and undercounter refrigeration: evaporator fans, defrost circuits, dampers, fill valves, door and seal work, and sealed-system diagnosis under gauges. Integrated and panel-front dishwashers: fill, drain, heat and leak tracing.

Why altitude keeps coming up

Denver sits about a mile above sea level, and a gas burner metered for sea level runs rich up here — tall flame, orange tips, soot on pan bottoms, a simmer that will not hold. It is not a broken range and it is not something you learn to live with; it is an orifice set and an air-shutter adjustment. A surprising number of the ranges we see were installed without that conversion ever being done, and the owners had been told the appliance was the problem.

How a price is arrived at

Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it. What that fee buys is the meter work behind it — pressure at the manifold, continuity across an element, resistance at a probe, cabinet temperature logged over a cycle. Then you get the cause in plain words and one firm figure in writing, and nothing is dismantled or ordered until you have agreed to it. If the repair is not worth what it would cost on an old unit, we tell you that instead of quoting it.

The bands those figures fall into are printed in full on every repair page on this site — igniters and burner assemblies at one end, sealed-system work at the other — alongside what a comparable new appliance would cost, so the repair-or-replace decision is not one you have to take our word on.

What we do not do

• Other makes. If it is not a Viking, it wants somebody who carries those parts.
• Installation of a new appliance, gas line work and cabinetry alterations.
• Cosmetic panels and trim ordered to make a discontinued unit look new again.
• Anything we cannot get parts for. If the part is gone, we say so on the phone.
