Oven Dead, Burners Fine: Is the Range Worth Fixing?

One side down, one side sound, and only one of them is dear to replace.

This is the scenario that sends most people looking for a new range, and it is the one where the arithmetic argues hardest against them. The oven has stopped. The burners are untouched by whatever happened and go on working exactly as they did. What is standing in the kitchen is a machine with one half out.

A decision, not a diagnosis

We are not going to guess in writing at why your oven is dead. That is settled with the meter on the visit, and a page that names a part it has not seen is selling something. What this page does is the other job: whether the fault, once named, is worth putting right on this machine.

The arithmetic, plainly

The ledger beside this text is the whole of it. One band for the oven side against the cost of a comparable range, before anybody has touched a cabinet or a gas run. There is a great deal of room between those two figures, and nothing in the middle of it is a reason to replace a rangetop that works.

The reason it looks closer than it is comes from the wrong instinct — that a range is one appliance and half of it failing means half its life has gone. It is not one appliance. It is a cooking surface and a cavity that share a cabinet, and they wear at completely different rates because they are used at completely different rates.

What changes the answer

Three things, none of them the oven.

The first is how the kitchen cooks. A household that bakes needs the cavity and will feel the repair as relief; one that lives on the burners may quite reasonably decide to wait, and a wait costs nothing as long as nobody has been told the range is finished.

The second is the state of the rangetop. Burners that light on every position and hold low mean you are buying one repair. Burners already giving trouble mean you are looking at the beginning of a list, and that list gets weighed as a whole.

The third is the part. Model and serial come off the label under the control panel and settle whether the oven side can be supplied at all. A repair nobody can source is not a cheaper option than replacement — it is not an option.

What the visit settles

Which part, which band, and whether the top half of this machine has anything else coming. You get all three before any work is agreed, and if the answer turns out to be that the range is not worth it, you get that as clearly as the other one.

Before you decide anything

  • Work out how this kitchen really uses the oven. A household that cooks on top has a different answer to the same fault than one that bakes every week.
  • Light every burner and take each one down to its lowest step. What you are keeping carries as much weight in this decision as what has failed.
  • Decide whether a separate oven is going into the kitchen anyway. Some homes on this route already have one, and that changes what the range still has to do.

One dead half is not a reason to buy the other half again. Ring Viking Repair Service Denver on (720) 704-2791 and the oven side gets priced against keeping the burners you already have.
